11 Reasons Why You Should Do More Walking

Why should you do more walking? If you walk for half an hour to an hour each day, it’s one of the best things you can do for your spirit, mind, and body.

A good walk can help strengthen and shape your legs, giving great definition to calves, quads, hamstrings and lifting your glutes (buttock muscles)€“ especially if you add hills or brisk intervals. But if you really pay attention to your posture as you walk, it can tone your abs and shrink your waist, too.

Let’s look at several other great reasons to start walking.

Walkers Have Longer Lifespans

There was a study that showed that men who walked two miles a day cut their risk of dying by nearly half. The walkers€™ risk of dying was a lot lower from cancer too. There are other studies that show similar results.

There was some research to suggest that if you walk an additional 2,000 steps a day, in addition to your regular activities, you may never put on another pound. That’s reason enough to keep off the pounds. Especially for the chubby older people out there, keeping weight off, and living longer, should be very enticing.

Walk Away The Pounds

Exercise like walking is a critical part of any weight loss program. You still need to pay attention to how much you weigh in order to lose weight. Walking helps you cut down on inches of fat, pounds of flab, pump up the metabolism, and build up that lean muscle. Of the many successful long-term weight losers out there, almost all of them have a program of walking or some other kind of exercise.

There have been several studies that have shown that walking dramatically cuts down the risk of cancer. It’s also helpful for people going through cancer treatment, and it enhances their chances of survival and recovery.

The ability of exercise to boost mood is undisputed. Studies have shown regular, moderate-intensity exercise (such as brisk walking) to be as effective as antidepressants in cases of mild to moderate depression. There is a lessened risk of impotence in people who walk from mid-life forward.

A brisk 2 mile walk can reduce men’s risk of impotence according to Dr. Irwin Goldstein, from Boston University School of Medicine in a study published in the August, 2000 issue of Urology.
